An Indian Police Clearance Certificate is issued after the checks required by the competent issuing authority. Its wording and scope depend on the route and purpose. It should not be reduced to a universal statement that there are no pending cases, nor treated as a substitute for every country’s police certificate.
Start with the receiving institution’s requirement
A PCC may be requested for a particular immigration, residence, employment or other application. Check the application category, country history, certificate type and acceptable issue date. It is not a universal requirement for every OCI application, education application, bank service or passport renewal merely because someone has lived abroad.
Choose the correct application route
Applicants abroad should begin with the Indian Mission or Post responsible for their place of residence and its current consular instructions. Applicants using the domestic route should follow Passport Seva and the relevant Passport Office requirements. Passport Seva and the Regional Passport Office are parts of the domestic process, not two independent PCC products. A local police certificate is appropriate only where the receiving institution specifies or accepts it.
Official starting points: Passport Seva at Indian Embassies and Consulates and Passport Seva PCC application guidance.
What an assistant can and cannot do
An assistant may help prepare a checklist, organize supporting documents and coordinate permitted follow-up. The applicant may have to submit the application, provide consent, attend an appointment or complete verification personally. Police verification in India may be required. Neither an authorization letter nor a Power of Attorney overrides the authority’s rules, and the two documents should not be treated as interchangeable.
Applicants in the United States and other countries
For the United States, identify the Indian consulate with jurisdiction over your residence. The Consulate General of India in New York PCC guidance identifies VFS Global for the outsourced PCC service for Indian nationals. Do not assume that a BLS route applies or that one consulate’s checklist covers every applicant. Follow the official consulate link to its appointed provider.
For the UK, UAE, Australia and Canada, use the Indian Mission or Post’s current local instructions and the receiving institution’s police-certificate checklist. Providers, submission methods and evidence can differ or change. This guide does not promise a fixed national processing period or substitute a generic address-history rule for the receiving authority’s requirements.
Documents, verification and timing
Prepare the identity, passport, residence-status, address and purpose information required by the relevant route. Supply accurate Indian address and police-station details where requested. Do not send unnecessary sensitive records at the initial inquiry stage. Missing information, appointment availability, police checks or requests for clarification may affect processing.
There is no single six-month acceptance rule for all recipients. Ask the receiving institution how recent the certificate must be and whether later travel or residence changes affect its requirements. Priority assistance concerns coordination only; it cannot guarantee expedited government checks or issuance.
Translation, apostille and consular documents
Confirm the issuing body and the recipient’s authentication instructions before ordering an add-on. A document issued by a diplomatic or consular agent should not be assumed eligible for the ordinary Hague Apostille route. Translation, authentication and substantive acceptance are separate questions. Consult India MEA guidance and the HCCH Apostille Convention information for the relevant route.
PCC and NABC serve different purposes
PCC concerns the competent authority’s police-clearance process. An NABC concerns a specified search of birth-registration records in a particular jurisdiction and period. An NABC is not a police certificate or proof that no birth record exists anywhere.
LexBridge8 assistance and fees
The PCC Base Service Fee is USD 598 for the agreed scope. Necessary government, authority, travel, courier and other third-party expenses are separate at actual cost. We assess feasibility and personal requirements before case opening, provide milestone updates and obtain written approval before additional work or charges outside the quotation. Tracked delivery is arranged where appropriate and available.
Read the PCC service scope or request a case assessment.
Engagement and payment
Sign the Engagement Agreement before paying. Choose 70% initially and 30% before final release, or 100% upfront. SHERYLUX8 confirms receipt and formally opens the case before work begins. Actual Costs remain separate. Read the payment arrangements and Terms of Service, including Work Commencement and cancellation.
